The Balmoral Hotel
The Balmoral is not only one of Edinburgh's grandest hotels, it is also a city landmark. The 100-year-old building is located on the New Town's main street, Princes Street, and right by Waverley, the central railway station. It was in fact built in the Scottish baronial style as a railway hotel, and is now a five-star venue run by the Rocco Forte chain. It oozes old world charm but with modern standards of luxury. There is an indoor pool, spa, a Michelin starred restaurant and afternoon teas are served in the Palm Court.

The Scotsman Hotel
A relative newcomer in a city with so many historic venues, the Scotsman Hotel has been housed in the former grand old offices of the Scotsman newspaper since 2001. The elegant Edwardian-era décor includes a walnut-paneled lobby and a marble staircase. But despite the grandeur, the luxury hotel has a boutique feel about it. There are great views from some of the rooms and if you feel a scoop coming on you can stay in the old editor's office. All rooms include a welcoming dram of whisky as well.

The Glasshouse
The Glasshouse is a modern and hip hotel that incorporates a lot of glass into the castellated façade of Lady Glenorchy's Church. The 1970s style rooms, with floor to ceiling windows, include push button curtains and sliding doors opening onto a lush roof garden with great views onto Calton Hill or balconies with city views. Suites come with mini-decanters of whisky. It's currently one of Marriott's Autograph Collection brand of lifestyle hotels and was redesigned in 2013.

The Witchery by the Castle
In the same vein as its sister restaurant, the Witchery is a medieval mad hatter's riot of a hotel. It's actually a collection of romantically decadent suites located above the restaurant or in an atmospheric courtyard nearby. Both locations are mere steps away from the castle. This place offers extravagant excess yet it is also surprisingly discreet. And despite being housed in 16th century listed buildings, the suites, with names such as the Turret and the Inner Sanctum, have all the mod cons you would expect when paying £300-400.

Prestonfield House
Situated in its own parkland beneath the famous rocky summit of Arthur's Seat, this former 17th century mansion is not strictly speaking in the city center. But it's close enough. And for those wanting a country house vibe mixed in with their city break, it's ideal. Prestonfield is opulent, theatrical and romantic. Contemporary comforts include mood lighting in the rooms and 47" TVs. Peacocks and Highland cattle roam the grounds, which also feature a croquet lawn and putting green. Bicycles are also available for hire, which is handy for the Royal Mile just two miles away.
